The game made its digital debut on February 26, 2014, gracing the realms of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, it snuck onto Steam and the North American PlayStation Store a day ahead of schedule, landing on February 25, 2014. The Japanese release followed for PS3 and Xbox 360 on June 25, 2014.
Anticipation brewed for versions designed for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, which were slated for the Nintendo eShop. Unfortunately, these plans were dashed, and the releases were canceled, citing ‘delayed development’ as the culprit.
Pac-Man Museum is a treasure trove for fans of the iconic yellow pellet-muncher, offering a nostalgic journey through the maze of gaming history.
Pac-Man Gameplay
When it comes to iconic video game characters, few can hold a candle to the legendary Pac-Man. This little yellow circle first made its wakka-wakka debut in arcades way back in 1980, and it’s been captivating players with its dot-chomping antics ever since. Even in the modern gaming landscape, the simple pleasure of sitting down for a quick ten-minute game of Pac-Man remains ever enticing and, dare I say it, timeless. So, to celebrate 42 glorious years of this Namco mascot, let’s dive into the pill-popping world of Pac-Man Museum +.
Pac-Man Museum + boasts an impressive collection of 14 distinct games, spanning the spectrum from beloved classics to the wonderfully weird. But before you embark on any of these nostalgic journeys, you’ll find yourself in an arcade-themed hub, where our hungry hero stands at the ready. In this hub, you’ll spot the cabinets for the games you’re itching to play, alongside Pac-themed decorations and even a gachapon machine (but more on that in a moment).
Most folks will undoubtedly kick off their nostalgia trip with a classic game of Pac-Man, which is as delightful as ever. Dodging those ghosts and gobbling dots in this 42-year-old gem continues to bring a grin to my face, and despite its numerous re-releases, it never loses its charm.
In addition to the original, Pac-Man Museum also serves up a handful of reimagined versions of Pac-Man, each with its own unique graphics, power-ups, and mazes to explore. Pac-Mania, for instance, takes the classic into the realm of 3D with an unusual zoomed-in perspective and introduces the ability to jump. Then there are the Pac-Man Arrangement games, with their bizarre and fantastical stages, featuring boost pads, conveyor belts, and multi-tiered floors. While none of these quite reach the iconic status of the original, they certainly offer some enjoyable variations.
Delving deeper into the vault of older titles, Super Pac-Man and Pac & Pal offer eccentric twists on the classic formula. Super Pac-Man has you collecting fruit in a maze filled with locked doors that require you to snag keys for access. And if that’s not perplexing enough, Pac & Pal presents an almost bewildering gaming experience involving card flipping and a green ghost ally. These games may not become anyone’s top picks, but hey, no judgment to all you Pac & Pal enthusiasts out there.
For those in the mood for 2D platforming action, Pac-Man Museum has you covered as well. While Pac-Land may not quite hit the mark, being a side-scrolling platformer released a year before the original Super Mario Bros., Pac-In-Time steps up the game. It challenges you to collect all the dots in a stage, offering various power-ups to aid you in your quest. The standout here is a move reminiscent of the Ninja Rope from Worms, providing a fantastic means of traversing the stage.
Before we get to the cream of the crop in this collection, let’s touch on a few quirky inclusions. Pac-Motos throws our yellow hero into an arena, where you must shove enemies off the edge, much like a full game of Mario Party’s Bumper Balls. Then there’s Pac ‘n Roll Remix, a remake of a DS ball-rolling game where Pac-Man is the ball. It’s a fun addition, though it loses some of the charm of the original DS stylus-swiping mechanics. And if you’re in search of a multiplayer option, Pac-Man Battle Royale delivers the goods. It’s essentially regular Pac-Man, but the goal is to outlast your friends and gobble them up once they turn blue, just like the ghosts.
Now, onto the crown jewels of Pac-Man Museum +, where I happily invested more than a few gaming tokens. First up, Pac-Attack ranks as one of my all-time favorite puzzle games. It ingeniously combines falling blocks with Pac-Man and his ghostly foes. By manipulating and aligning the blocks to create a path of ghosts for Pac-Man to devour, you can clear the board and prolong your survival. There’s even a puzzle mode that challenges you to solve each stage by clearing all the ghosts using a limited number of Pacs. And if you’re in the mood for some competitive action, the versus mode will trigger nostalgia for many, though perhaps with a hint of traumatic memories for some, as my mother would attest.
Pac-Man Championship Edition remains as exhilarating now as it was when it first graced Xbox Live Arcade in 2007. It brings a high-octane arcade experience and all the score-chasing excitement you could wish for. The neon aesthetics are as stylish as ever, and there’s a plethora of modes to explore and leaderboards to conquer. It’s a bit of a shame that its sequels, DX and Championship Edition 2, aren’t included in Pac-Man Museum +, as they were equally enjoyable.
Last but by no means least, we have the fantastic Pac-Man 256. This Pac-Man-style endless runner is incredibly addictive, offering unlockable power-ups, objectives to complete while fleeing the relentless glitch, and a multitude of snazzy skins to please your visual senses. If, by some strange twist of fate, you’ve missed out on this gem on mobile and console, rest assured, it’s a fantastic addition to the Pac-Man Museum + package.
So there you have it, a journey through the maze of Pac-Man Museum +, filled with classics, oddities, and standout titles that will keep you entertained and craving those dots for hours on end.
